California Redemption is a punk rock band from Thousand Oaks, California. Living only minutes away from Oxnard California, California Redemption is often linked to Oxnard's Nardcore scene.

Originally started as a Bad Religion cover band with the name "Battery Legion," the original band members played a handful of shows in the Summer of 2002, including a high-intensity backyard Thousand Oaks, California show put on for friends and family.

By the end of the summer of 2002, the band members had written eight original songs, which were released in December as demo under the name California Redemption. Their first official show, on December 26, 2002, was played with the legendary Nardcore band Ill Repute at the Ojai Womens Center.

Bad Religion
California Redemption started out as a Bad Religion cover band. To this day they will randomly cover Bad Religion songs. On one occasion, Keegan (bass) was late to a show. Instead of delaying or waiting, the rest of CAre enlisted a member of Keep Fighting, and covered about 45 minutes worth of Bad Religion songs. When Keegan arrived, they started their own set without even a minute to rest.
Battery Legion
Battery Legion is what California Redemption called their Bad Religion cover band.

[edit] C

CIA - California Institute of Abnormal Arts
Really strange place where CARe played on May 10th and July 11th 2003. It is kind of like a museum for really wierd circus oddities and other unusual stuff. More information is available here.
Cobalt Cafe
Funny venue in the San Fernando Valley where the band played multiple shows (February 2003 and June 2003, at least). Mikkei is currently boycotting the Cobalt for their subpar treatment of bands.
Compilation CD's
Let Them Eat Records has released at least 2 compilation CD's featuring California Redemption. These include Mixo-De-Punko Volume 1 and Mixo-De-Punko Volume 2.

[edit] D

Daddy-O's Hot Rot Bar
Funny place in the Sacramento area where California Redemption played one show. The fact that they needed to move the pool table out of the way for the bands to play should have been a foreshadowing of the night. A belligerent drunk fat-man yelled at the band calling them "Tree Hugging Hippies." The band Underclass saved California Redemption's skinny asses by standing up to the scary big dudes.
Demos
California Redemption has passed out 1000's of free CD's. They made several demos before their first full length, which all included what they called a "digital piracy pack" so that everyone could get their music for free. Between albums they have been known to pass out free demos as well. One of them, entitled "Demo 2005" included a cover of the song "Fortunate Son." Alon, didn't think they were actually going to record this (and has made it clear that he didn't WANT to record this), so he didn't learn the song till the day of the recording. It definitely shows.
Do Not Resuscitate
New California Redemption album to be released January of 2007 by AWOL Records.

East Street Ice Arena
Ice skating rink in Simi Valley, California, where the band played a couple shows on the ice. Fans, friends, and family skated around while California Redemption played some great shows. Supposedly, there was supposed to be a cover charge for these shows, but the flyer said FREE...so everyone that didn't skate just walked onto the ice without paying. For some reason, they Zambonied the ice before the show, and the stage slid around while the band played. At one of the ice shows, Alon was sick as a dog and was coughing up blood behind the amps. When I asked him about being sick, he didn't seem to care...he was looking for his copy of "La Bamba."

Good Riddance
3 out of 5 members of California Redemption have a healthy obsession with Good Riddance. Members of California Redemption have been quoted to saying that they wrote their song entitled "Veterans Hall" after they saw Good Riddance and The Missing 23rd at the Vet's Hall in Santa Cruz.

Ill Repute
California Redemption has a "Bonus Track" on Ill repute's Live album where they cover the Ill Repute song "Laugh It Off." One time Alon was invited on stage at an Ill Repute show to sing with Jon repute. He sang half the song, and did a flip off the stage.
Ibanez
Mikkei uses Ibanez guitars.

Lost Songs
Alon and Mikkei told me that there are a few songs which never made it on the albums or demos. One song (which is circulating around the internet) is a cover of an old COF song called "New School" is sometimes labeled with CAre's original name "Battery Legion." 2 more songs called "screw" and "Spy" were recorded at baseline studios and never released. "Spy" later became "Preserve and Protect" and was released on Demo 2005 in a different form. It is rumored that it will be released in studio quality in 2007. "Screw" has never been released. It was played live a few times, and Alon has been quoted as saying it was one of his favorite songs. The 2 final lost songs are "In the Twilight of Republic", an instrumental intoductory jam, and a song informal referred to as "Required".

[edit] O

Ojai Women's Center
This is where it all started. California Redemption played their very first show here, on-stage that night with Ill Repute, Keep Fighting, COF, and MR. K's Adult Bookstore. CARe was surprisingly good for their first show, although they were visibly stiff and a bit nervous. Alon left his sweatshirt on all night, which is extremely rare.
Operation Ivy
California Redemption covers the Operation Ivy song "The Crowd" fairly often at their shows. Sometimes, right after the song is over, Doug will start playing "She's a Bombshell" without the rest of the band. Alon and Joe have been seen wearing Operation Ivy hats/clothing.

[edit] P

Product Of Suburbia AKA POS
Product Of Suburbia played many shows with California Redemption at the beginning. Their guitarist Joe, has recently (2006) joined California Redemption to play guitar.
Propagandhi
One of Mikkei's main songwritting inspirations during California Redemption's childhood.

[edit] Q

Quail Run Dr.
Street in Agoura Hills, California where Alon grew up. Interestingly, Oliver Gold, of the alternative band American Eyes grew up three doors down. Oliver was always a wierd kid. He used to dress funny, paint his nails, and his parents would spoil him rotten, buying him whatever he wanted. One time he was a piece of chalk for Halloween.

[edit] R

Redwood Middle School
Alon and Doug went their for 7th and 8th grade. They met in woodshop "throwing shit at the substitute teacher." Mikkei also went there.

[edit] S

Santa Fe, New Mexico
Played a show here on January 31, 2004 at the Aztec Cafe as part of a "Punx for Dean" (Howard Dean) show. A review of this show can be found here.
Stolen Equipment
Keegan had his bass stolen at the Cobalt Cafe in Canoga Park, CA. Mikkei had his guitar stolen at the American Legion Hall in Ventura, CA.

[edit] T

This Time It's For Money
Name of the first official full length. Has 11 songs on it and was released by Let Them Eat Records. Recorded and mixed at Bassline studios in Simi Valley.
Thousand Oaks High School
All members of California Redemption went to school there.
The Lady
Doug also plays drums in a rock 'n roll band called The Lady.

[edit] W

Whisky-A-Gogo
CARe played here on January 2nd, 2003 with Drop 6, James Marshall, and The Wreck. It was one of their first shows, and Alon and Mikkei kept kicking over the microphones that were miking Mikkei's guitar amp. The sound guy kept yelling at them. The band told me once that that show was their worst ever.
